In a down economy, businesses are looking for any way to get new customers. Now local stores and restaurants are turning to online coupons to get their names out and save customers money at the same time.

Groupon launched in Louisville in February and has nearly 100,000, increasing by five hundred a day.

Pounds of butter, barrels of confectioner's sugar, and loads of sprinkles make for a sweet job at Gigi's Cupcakes. Amanda Dahl, the store manager says, "They're very large, piled high with icing, just beautiful."

Jen Best admits she isn't the most technical person in the world, but when her website designer suggested in June that she check out a new service called Groupon she was curious. After spending thousands of dollars on traditional advertising, without much success, she was keen to promote her tea shop to a brand new community. The 34-year-old entrepreneur sifted through the group buying site for a few days, and like many of the site's members, she got hooked.

In case you're among those who haven't heard of Groupon, here's a quick primer. Groupon, a Chicago-based "deal of the day" website founded by Andrew Mason, is a combination of the words "group" and "coupon." Every day, in cities around the world, the site sends out one coupon to subscribers in each market it serves. A coupon with a significant discount and a caveat attached -- if enough people sign up and agree to use the coupon, the deal will go through. If there aren't many takers, the deal falls through.
